HOOTD | Fall for Plaid

Hi all,

Zara blanket scarf 2014Plaid is quintessential during this time of year, however since I’m originally from Florida I never cared much for it until the pass two years when I would notice more and more people wearing plaid starting Fall.  Of course, that made me fall in love with plaid and while I’m still working my way toward buying more pieces for my wardrobe I thought I would start off with the ever-so-popular Zara plaid blanket scarf. Doesn’t this blanket scarf make a great accessory?

Grey maxi cardigan check scarfIn addition to the amazing plaid scarf, I’m pairing it with two other favorite items currently the maxi cardigan that I bought from Nordstrom during their anniversary sale, and the OTK boots by Franco Sarto which are dupes for the coveted 5050 boots.  This time around I knew Fall flies by in Chicago so I’ve been wearing these pieces, especially the scarf and cardigan, with several different outfits. The cardigan will definitely be staying in my closet now since it is way too cool in Chitown for any thin cardigan.

red grey outfit OTK bootIt was quite windy when we took these snaps so I’m not preggers! Maybe also bloated since it was after the halal food festival which I was disappointed in this year due to the lack of food stalls and more organization. So while I took some snaps there it isn’t enough for me to rave about, but if you would like to get an idea you can read about it in my last year’s post here.

We moved indoors for the rest of the snaps since the ones outside were hard to take with the crazy wind. Here I am admiring my boots– so comfy!

Thank you for visiting and have a great weekend!

Wear it Wednesday | Fringe

Happy Wednesday!

Nordstrom Leith Fringe Cardigan Vest

It has been a really long time since I did any type of hijabi outfit of the day post so I thought I would share one of my favorite purchases for Fall — this beautiful fringe sweater vest.  As soon as I saw it in Nordstrom I knew it had to be mine! After having the in-store tailor alter the fringe length (gratis) to fit my height I took it home, and have worn it out several times already.  This fringe sweater vest has good weight to it, it’s actually quite affordable and completely on trend.

black sweater vest and maxi dress

Fringe is big for this season and for the upcoming seasons in outerwear, shoes, handbags, scarves, etc. Basically, everything you can imagine but it does seem a little daunting to me on a leather jacket so I think this sweater vest has the perfect amount of fringe without being overwhelming.  It is quite warm and cozy for Fall, and a lovely transition piece like I did here with my favorite Summer faux  wrap maxi dress.  Faux wrap maxi dresses is where it’s at! They are just so easy, comfortable, and make you look put together with just one piece.

Hajj/Eid Mubarak Party + Little Wings Gallery Review

Happy Wednesday!
Eid dessert topper

Eid was a few weeks ago, and the husband and I decided to host a hajj mubarak party for some relatives who were able to make the blessed journey this year. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and is recommended to perform at least once in a lifetime (those who are able to financially and physically). Hajji’s (pilgrims who have performed hajj) return home several day’s after the celebration of Eid, thus the reason for my late post.
Eid Mubarak banner

For the party decor I used several items sent to me by Cherie of Little Wings Gallery.  She has a background in Design that has helped her to create beautiful contemporary Islamic decor.  The Eid decor set I was sent had a banner, a 8″x10″ print, several cupcake toppers, cupcake/dessert flags, little gift box, name tags for gifts and also buffet table labels.

Eid Mubarak print little wings gallery

I was emailed all the items to print, and after I did I just loved the pattern and colors as it is the theme I’ve been loving lately.  I was then able to set aside some time (aka commercial breaks) to cut everything out, and assembled the banner with twine.  It does take a little bit of time to complete if you are doing it alone so I would definitely make this a project with the little ones.  All the items come with easy instructions on what materials you need and  how to put it together so there is no guessing.

Cake topper, desserts and kabaa Because this was a Hajj/Eid Mubarak party, I decided to create a cake banner with the cupcake flag toppers. I took two bamboo skewers that I usually use for chicken skewers, and some twine to make this banner.  Another fun and easy idea is to make  a kabaa out of construction paper and a square tissue paper box.  I didn’t have construction paper so  I used gift wrapping tissue paper in gold and black.  It took a few minutes to make and was a big hit. If you want to take it one step further for kids you can turn this kabaa box into a sadaqah (charity) box.

I loved hosting this party and putting together my black and gold decor, and it definitely became more festive with the little decor touches from Little Wings Gallery.  Do check out their Etsy shop for more fun Islamic prints, children’s room decor, stationary and more.  If you would like something personalized you can have that done too.  And the best part? 10% of proceeds from all sales go to a Muslim’s Aid charity.

Happy Saturday!

Puff pasty egg breakfastI love the weekends–who doesn’t? But I especially enjoy the quality time with my husband.  On Friday’s we usually have date nights, on Saturday mornings we have brunch where the husband makes his delicious spicy omelet, and on Sunday’s I usually wipe up something yummy for us to eat.  A few Sunday’s ago for brunch I wanted to make something special with puff pastry sheet that I had sitting in the freezer– it was the same day I made these yummy chocolate banana muffins.  I usually use puff pastry sheet to make samosas/meat filled pastry during Ramadan and not much else. So I started looking up recipes and then went straight to the Pepperidge Farm site to see what ideas they had and came across this recipe. I’m also thinking of trying a few other versions of this recipe for example this, and this.

puff pastry sheetI changed up a few things, by adding habanero cheese I found at the local Farmer’s Market, made it a veggie version by adding tomatoes instead of the meat, and desified it (aka spiced it up) by sprinkling some chaat masala on top.  Overall, the flavors meshed really well together, and definitely made it a fancy brunch idea that requires little effort, is filling and healthy.

pastry tomatoe habanero cheeseAs you can see I baked the pastry for about 10 minutes, made an indentation with a spoon in the middle of the pastry, then added my cheese, a few slices of tomatoes, and added the egg right in the middle.  This will seem messy at first as the egg might spill over but don’t worry! Gently place the baking sheet in the oven and let it bake for a few more minutes until the egg’s set.

Happy National Handbag Day!

Happy Friday!

And a great Friday it is with it being National Handbag Day! Yes, it’s actually an official thing so why not celebrate by splurging (or saving) on a great handbag?! I’ve compiled some amazing options that are all under $350 but they all look more expensive than that.

I am soo loving the new Paris clutch by Rebecca Minkoff! If you have been following my fashion posts then it is no surprise I love Minkoff handbags. They are always on trend and the price point is so affordable for the quality. And the Ostwald Helgason x ALDO Rise collaboration’s lily handbag is such a beauty in the crimson color.

Which handbag do you have your eye on?

October Breast Cancer Awareness | Think Before You Pink

Hi all,

breast cancer free printable

Free Breast Cancer Awareness Month Printables at FrogPrincePaperie.com *Photo credit: Frog Prince Paperie

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, aka wear pink month.  This month companies everywhere are supporting breast cancer by featuring limited edition products to support research of breast cancer.  As I mentioned in my 20 Facts About Me Tag, my mom passed away from breast cancer when I was a teen.  This terrible disease affects 1 out of 8 women, according to NationalBreastCancer.org, and is the second leading cause of death in women. Please do take some time from your day this month to educate yourself on the signs and symptoms, how to do a self-breast exam, and what you can do to help further research. I, myself, take time to update myself on new research, myths and facts about the disease because you never know if an acquaintance, friend, relative or someone close to these people have just been diagnosed, receiving treatment after being diagnosed, in remission or perhaps passed away from breast cancer.

In addition, bcaction.org, has started the “Think Before You Pink” campaign in 2002 which sheds light on how to become aware of supporting blindly companies/products that may be misinforming or doing little to nothing to further research on Breast Cancer, and calls companies to be more transparent/accountable about their pink products.  Therefore, before you spend your money remember to ask these 6 critical questions:

  1. How much money from your purchase actually goes toward breast cancer?

  2. What is the maximum amount that will be donated?

  3. How much money was spent marketing the product?

  4. How are the funds being raised?

  5. To what breast cancer organization does the money go, and what types of programs does it support?

  6. What is the company doing to assure that its products are not contributing to the breast cancer epidemic?

If you don’t see the information you want on the packaging of a product, you should write or call the company and ask.

A&U Cook | Chocolate Banana Muffins

Hi all!

chocolate banana muffinI made these delicious muffins a few Sunday’s ago for brunch at home with my husband.  I missed cooking up new recipes the past few months since I had fractured my arm and was unable to do any chores or cooking.  I thoroughly enjoyed making these chocolate banana muffins since they are a version of banana bread–which I have made several times at home.

banana bread muffinThis recipe was easy to make since most of the items I had on hand–ripe bananas, chocolate chips, walnuts/pecans and flour.  I used the recipe found on Taste of Home, though changed up a few things such as using honey instead of sugar (we hardly buy sugar) in the same quantity as the recipe states, and 2 tablespoon of baking powder instead of baking soda.

breakfast muffinsThese chocolate banana muffins came out soft and just the perfect consistency for a muffin. The husband wanted to eat them all in one sitting, but I tempted him with the other brunch items I cooked up that day.  I’m always happy to find recipes that work and come out as stated because then I can share them with everyone and save them as my favorites to use in the future.

Chocolate banana muffinsThe recipe said it would yield 2 dozen muffins, however I used my cupcake pan that holds 1 dozen at a time, and I wanted my muffins to rise completely so I used all the batter in the cupcake pan filling up each cup about 3/4 full.  It made 12 perfectly delicious muffins for the husband and I to enjoy.  Remember to let the muffins cool in the pan for 5 minutes before placing them on a cooling rack for about 10 minutes and bon appetite!

Review | Got Eidee? Shirt

Happy Sunday!

I love quirky fashion statements- so I was happy review this got eidee? shirt by Anika Shah on Etsy.  I ended up wearing this shirt on Eid, since it was just the husband and I this year celebrating in the middle of the week with my fractured arm.  As you can tell these snaps are several weeks old since I am wearing my arm sling.  I couldn’t make any special Eid food thus we decided to go out for brunch at Southport Cafe.

IMG_4968.JPG

My motivation for creating these fun, Eid shirts was my five year old son. He looks forward to the holiday Eid but he definitely looks more forward to receiving Eidee(s) more. We had an Eid party years ago, and these shirts were created as an Eidee (gift) along with a $5 bill to each kid. Since then, so many parents have been raving about the “got eidee?” shirts. I’ve sold them and given them away and people love the cute, catchy phrase! It’s hard living in the US and being raised Muslim especially when other holidays are greatly publicized. Eight years later, my then five year old son who is now thirteen solely created the “99 Problems but Fasting Ain’t One” Ramadan shirt. In addition to the collection, the beard shirt was born simultaneous to the hipster beard trend that is apparent nowadays. I have fun creating these shirts but enjoy seeing a fellow Muslim have fun wearing a “got eidee?” shirt. After all, you know it’s Eid until someone asks, “got eidee?” – Anika Shah

IMG_4361.JPG
At Southport cafe we tried their bread pudding pancakes, and they were quite good but I think I prefer the ones at Meli cafe better. After brunch we walked around Wrigley Field Stadium, then Michigan ave for some window shopping– it was a relaxing day with the husband.

The shirt is great for kid’s of all ages, especially school aged. The shirt is handmade with 100% cotton, and quite soft when on. I did wash it after wearing it, and it held up to the wash with all the lettering still in place. This shirt is great to give as a gift or just to wear around after Eid namaz lounging with the family.

Moroccan Theme Eid Decor by Titli Designs

Happy Fall Friends!

blue yellow white home decor Eid

I’ve been away from blogging for most of Summer, and I missed it.  As I had mentioned in my last post, I was sick throughout Summer and then fractured my arm.  Alhamdulillah I am recovering and my arm has gotten back most of its range of motion.  Now on to sharing a wonderful Etsy Muslim shop owner, Sadaf of Titli Designs, who is completely talented especially in  creating beautiful graphic home decor prints and stationary.  Sadaf, had graciously participated in my Eid al-Fitr giveaway, but because I broke my arm I couldn’t do a full review of her products.

titli designs blue yellow eid printSadaf is a Canadian based designer, who not only specializes in these beautiful prints but also creates children’s clothing and works professionally in the medical field.  She was kind enough to send me a few items from her Morroccan Theme Eid decor line for me to review.  This set included 1. A set of six Eid greeting notecards in six lovely colours. Colours include, “Sunshine”, “Tangerine”, “True Coral”, “Peach”, “Blush”, and “Aqua”. 2. An Eid Mubarak Banner in the “Sunshine” colour. 3. An 8”x10” print “Allah is sufficient for us.” ~ Quraan 3:173 in the “Sunshine” Colour. 4. Six Cupcake Wrappers in the “Sunshine” Colour. 5. Six Cupcake Toppers in the “Sunshine” Colour.

All the items came beautifully packed and printed on quality card stock, thus there was no worry about them getting creased easily.  I was able to add these items to my existing decor, and they fit right in by adding a touch of fancy to my house.  I love to decorate for the season especially for Eid, and one of my favorite things to do is shop around my house and use things I already have.  I don’t live in a huge house, thus I don’t want to add to the clutter, therefore I used a frame I already had to place the 8 x 10″ Allah is Sufficient for us print.  Next to those I placed some of the greeting cards I was sent along with the set, however I do plan to use these to send out to family and friends.  The greeting cards are blank inside so you can add a personalized message, and they are made in quality card stock.

titli designs eid banner blue yellowThe Eid Mubarak banner is cut in scalloped shape and while it’s small in size it is perfect to add a special touch to an area without overwhelming.  I was easily able to put this up with push pins as it came assembled with a thick string.

Moroccan theme eid cupcake wrapperAren’t these scalloped cupcake wrapper and toppers just adorable?! I had made these chocolate banana muffin’s over the weekend (recipe coming soon), and thought they would look beautiful lined with the Moroccan themed wrappers.  They were quite easy to put together as all I needed was some clear tape and toothpicks.  I think they make the cupcakes all that much more festive and fancy.  For an actual Eid party you would only need a few around you dessert table to make it a little extra special.

Moroccan theme eid home decorSince Eid al-Adha is right around the corner, I will be doing a few more Eid related decor posts and also give a few of my tips on how to change up your decor easily without buying a whole lot of new items.  One of the easiest things I do is replace my throw pillows, however I mostly shop around for pillow covers rather than pillow with insert because that will just add to the clutter, and I switch up my coffee table decor.
