WIW | Leather Jacket & Maxi Skirt

Happy Wednesday!

Wow, I feel like it’s been forever since I did a Wear it Wednesday post.  I have not been able to take many outfit snaps lately since it’s freezing outside, and when I usually do step out for leisure it’s after sunset and outfit snaps at night don’t come out as great as in natural lighting.  Anywho, January for our family marks the beginning of birthday season.  A few of our family members have birthday’s in January, then the husband and I in February and it goes on until middle of the year when it transitions into anniversary season.

My #ootn — I loved this faux leather jacket that I picked up from Target!

Last month, as soon as we returned from our vacay we celebrated Umair’s sister’s birthday at Alhambra Palace Restaurant here in Chicago.  The restaurant is known more for it’s entertainment rather than the food.  The entertainment includes everything from several belly dancers, sword, fire dancers, to singers and then later just an all around dance room.  It was a fun night out and we got to dress up and take some snazzy snaps.

To the party I wore my purple pleated maxi skirt, but this time paired it with a faux leather jacket that gave the look an edge.  I continued the edgy look with my bag with chain details and some spiked bracelets.  There are so many fabulous faux leather jacket options that it’s hard not to have several in your closet, and maxi skirts are a must for a hijabi’s closet.

With my handsome husband, my love! Today is my best friend’s birthday. Happy Birthday hun! Love you beyond words!

With the beginning of the year, and with February being my birthday month it always inspires me to update my wardrobe by adding new staples that I can wear over and over again throughout the year.  Here are some pieces/styles that have been inspiring me lately.  Let’s see what I end up adding.

Thank you so much for visiting and have great day!

Umair’s Sweetheart,

Wear it Wednesday | Fringe

Happy Wednesday!

Nordstrom Leith Fringe Cardigan Vest

It has been a really long time since I did any type of hijabi outfit of the day post so I thought I would share one of my favorite purchases for Fall — this beautiful fringe sweater vest.  As soon as I saw it in Nordstrom I knew it had to be mine! After having the in-store tailor alter the fringe length (gratis) to fit my height I took it home, and have worn it out several times already.  This fringe sweater vest has good weight to it, it’s actually quite affordable and completely on trend.

black sweater vest and maxi dress

Fringe is big for this season and for the upcoming seasons in outerwear, shoes, handbags, scarves, etc. Basically, everything you can imagine but it does seem a little daunting to me on a leather jacket so I think this sweater vest has the perfect amount of fringe without being overwhelming.  It is quite warm and cozy for Fall, and a lovely transition piece like I did here with my favorite Summer faux  wrap maxi dress.  Faux wrap maxi dresses is where it’s at! They are just so easy, comfortable, and make you look put together with just one piece.

Wear it Wednesday | Afternoon Wedding Style

Happy Wednesday everyone!

I’m back with a Wear it Wednesday post–after many weeks of hiatus. However, I wanted to share this sweet, yet no fuss wedding guest outfit. A few weeks ago the husband and I were invited to a Valimah, a wedding reception hosted by the groom, it was at a local Pakistani restaurant.

I apologize for the bad snaps, we forgot to take our dslr and thus had to take snaps from the iphone, and later the snaps we did take from the dslr were just in bad lighting. But how handsome does my date look?

It was a Pakistani hybrid wedding and I could have worn a traditional outfit, but I opted to wear a beautiful maxi skirt that I got from Ann Taylor several months ago and was dying to wear to a perfect occasion. This skirt was a major score since it was a off-season sale item, and thus I had to wait till Winter passed to enjoy it. It is a bit long on me, however with the heels and my fancy BCBG floral belt it works. What do you think? The rest of my ensemble is basics that I paired here, and pieces I find incorporating in other outfits pretty easy.

Umair’s Sweetheart,

Wear it Wednesday | Leopard Print & Blue + Giveaway

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Leopard ScarfEven though it’s April it’s still quite chilly here in Chicago, as you can tell by the picture above. While the temperature is way better than negative degrees, the husband and I want it to be sunny everyday. I think this is one of my first HOOTD photo shoot for this year outdoors! Kinda crazy to realize that but I’m sure I’ll be able to do more of these HOOTD post’s now with the weather warming up.

Love necklaceThis HOOTD of the day started around the high-low black dress (a key piece), and the sparkly love necklace I’m wearing (related to the giveaway today). After deciding on the first two pieces I wanted to add a pop of color that is where the bright blue pants came in, and lastly when deciding on a scarf I went with leopard as it’s now considered a neutral and the print I’m wearing actually has hints of blue in it. I love how easy it is to pull a look together once you have one or two pieces to start off from and then just build the rest of the outfit around it.

Coat and treesThe sparkly love necklace I’m wearing in this HOOTD, was sent to me by a wonderful Etsy seller, Annika Lofberg. Annika owns the shop Glamorous Sparkle and specializes in pretty handmade bracelets, necklaces, and earrings that can be customized for a special occasion. She uses Czech glass beads in many of her creations, and because she is amazing she is offering one lucky AnUblog reader a bracelet of their choice from her Etsy shop. Yes, ANY bracelet you like from her shop. A few of my favorites here, here and here. Enter the giveaway through the rafflecopter widget below, read terms on widget, open worldwide! Additional entries can be earned everyday by tweeting about the giveaway until the giveaway ends (just remember to fill the widget).

The love necklace Annika sent to me was beautifully packaged, and is well made. At first the size of the pendent through me off, however once I wore it I actually liked the size because most times when I wear dainty necklaces they get hidden with my head scarf, and if you have been admiring those trendy necklaces with large font’s but are wondering how it will look on you then I think a pendent that is about 2″ will be a better alternative.

Wear it Wednesday | Boyfriend Jeans at Halal Food Festival

Happy Wednesday everyone!

A foodies heaven at Chicago’s 1st ever Halal Food Festival. Burgers, hot dogs, falooda, gyro’s, sweets, even music, henna booth, and snazzy Islamic clothing.

As soon as we entered the indoor festival, the aroma, the full-house, the many booths was overwhelming so we took a quick tour to see everything before settling on this yummy Mediterranean lunch from Taza Café.
Few minutes later we really wanted to try Mr. Broast so the husband quickly grabbed a few zinger burger’s from the booth because they were selling out like hot cakes burgers.IMG_1403IMG_1380
I had to take a picture of Max’s Chicago because they are my favorite for Chicago style hot dog’s. I’ve tried several items from their menu but their halal hot dog made me a hot dog aficionado.
For dessert we settled for delicious pistachio kulfi for the husband and I from MMM’s Gourmet Ice Cream.
Now to the main dish, my hijabi outfit of the day. I knew dressing comfortably would be key for this weekend event. I wore my new favorite boyfriend jeans that were perfect for the festival. Not only are they super comfy and non-restricting, but should definitely be a staple in a modest dressing fashionista’s closet. I’d been looking for a perfect pair of boyfriend jeans for several weeks now, and a lot of them were “fashionably” ripped – making them not modest or were not flattering for my body type or weren’t the type of wash I was looking for. Luckily I stopped at Old Navy, I haven’t shopped there for a long time since it’s usually a hit or miss type of store for me, and I found a vintage wash, fashionably-scuffed-up-but-not-ripped pair that fit me how I imagined boyfriend jeans should fit. I also found my “shine bright” statement tee from Old Navy plus a few other hit finds.

Aside from the food booths, My Halal Kitchen was present with her recipe book, I wanted to take a picture with her but unfortunately she was quite busy when I stopped at her booth. IMG_1393
Lastly, the husband and I bought some Islamic Swag statement shirts. His is “I’m fly coz my imaan is high” and mine say’s “Islam – all the cool kids are doing it.” We love supporting Muslim business’ and who could resist awesome Islamic wear? Check this local Chicago store out online and as they say “Wear your imaan on your sleeve.”IMG_1409IMG_1412

After the halal food festival, we took a detour and hung out with MJ!

Boyfriend jeans are great and I will keep my eye’s peeled for different styles and washes as I fade out the skinny jeans from my closet.

Have you found a great pair of boyfriend jean’s? or visited any fun events lately? I would love to know.

Wear it Wednesday | A little Leopard at the Art Institute of Chicago

Happy Wednesday!

The husband and I visited The Art Institute of Chicago last week by taking advantage of the free admission on Thursday’s for Illinois residents. It was the first time we were visiting and weren’t aware of the massiveness of the museum. The free admission hours are from 5-8 pm, and since we arrived after 6pm we scanned around the galleries mostly. But I plan to visit their new exhibit on Impressionism, Fashion & Modernity. Enjoy our day in pictures!

Hijabi outfit of the day consisted of black, red, gold details and a little leopard. I have worn these pieces separately several times but I’m always a little hesitant to wear this leopard bag because I think it’s too much animal print. But I love animal print, and do consider it a neutral so will have to incorporate more leopard in my outfits.

Of course, being silly with one of the paintings. I didn’t notice at the time but the lady in the painting is wearing red and black headscarf too!

I was loved the fact that there were ipad’s in some of the galleries that gave detailed pictures and information about the pieces. In the bottom picture, I was amazed at how high the jousting stick really was. It was even hard to capture it in the full picture.IMG_1152IMG_1155IMG_1158
This gallery featuring armory was probably the husband’s favorite area since he said the pieces were “real” as apposed to the paintings. IMG_1161IMG_1166IMG_1170
I was in awe after seeing Claude Monet’s self-portrait as his paintings have been my favorite for many years. Especially the water lily paintings in the next few pictures.IMG_1175
Seeing the paintings up-close in person is so different than seeing it online or in a picture, you truly see the detail’s and admire the work even more. IMG_1182IMG_1184IMG_1188IMG_1190IMG_1206IMG_1216IMG_1221IMG_1228
There are a lot of beautiful paintings and galleries with every type of art imaginable at the museum, and spending a whole day to admire everything The Art Institute of Chicago has to offer will be well worth the time especially if you appreciate art.IMG_1245

Wear it Wednesday | Fall Ready Boho Chic

Happy Wednesday everyone!

I can’t believe that it’s already the “unofficial” start of Fall! The temperature is slowly dipping but I’m crossing my finger’s for Summer to last a little bit longer. I kind of feel, well not kind of, I do feel that I missed out on Chicago Summer this year due to being out of town for all of June, some of July and then while fasting in Ramadan I didn’t want to step out in the scorching hotness. But to be honest, I miss Ramadan more than missing out on Summer.

If you have been following me on this blog or on social media, you probably already know that all HOOTD featured are outfits I actually wear in my daily life, and most outfit snaps are taken while on date night/day with the husband, or when I attend an event. I love to dress up sparkles and all for the husband, but I’m sure a lot of you can relate with me on the following meme that is popular on pinterest. Therefore, my outfits are planned in advance for special days. 19140367136953881_lft1d5wd_c  Now to the main outfit post! I ordered this beautiful boho chic skirt from Forever 21 a few weeks ago, and knew I was going to wear it out for a date night. This maxi skirt has vibrant Fall colors, and a great print to liven up a basic outfit. This skirt is something definitely different than my usual solid color skirts, and I think I will be looking for more beautiful printed skirts for my collection.

I will recommend all modest fashionista’s to not be afraid of print especially in maxi skirts because you can easily wear the skirt with many basics as I’ve done in this outfit.IMG_0828
For a recent date night we had to change our plan’s due to rain and ended up at a local Lou Malnati’s to indulge on a deep dish pizza, and later watched The Wolverine.IMG_0841
We are a couple of week’s behind on watching The Wolverine so no formal review, but the husband and I both enjoyed it, and give an overall rating of 7.5/10. Contrary to the feedback we had heard from family and friend’s about the movie. We also loved the end credit scene, which everyone failed to mention to us however we were taking our sweet time leaving the theatre and caught it.IMG_0843
The beautiful art you see in these pictures are up on the outside walls of the movie theatre we are regular’s at, and this last one is our favorite from the bunch!  Beautiful art all over downtown is one of the things I love most about Chi-town.

Wear it Wednesday | Basics in the City

Happy Wednesday!

Skyscrapers, the city, wayfaring, Chicago dance festival and yummy food all in a day’s worth of fun.

IMG_0365The husband and I explored the city on an architecture tour together this past weekend. I had heard so much about the architecture tour since moving to Chicago that it had been on my to-do list since last Summer.

IMG_0384It was a beautiful day for the tour, to walk around the city, and soak in the last bit of Summer.

Once on the boat, we snapped away the cityscapes and took advantage of our new camera’s capability resulting in these amazing shots–or we’re just pro’s like that.

A graphic white tee (also seen here), white blazer, dark washed skinny’s and a polka dot hijab/scarf made my hijabi outfit of the day. Following my love for simple casual’s, on trend black & white theme, and comfort resulted in this weekend’s outfit. The fun pattern on the scarf, the funky necklace, and white blazer elevate this weekend outfit of the day. Blazer’s in all colors are a must for a modest fashionista, and a white blazer (also seen here & here) just look’s so chic!

After the boat tour, we strolled and window shopped on Magnificent mile, and then headed to Grant Park where we sat picnic style at Jay Pritzker Pavilion to enjoy the Chicago dance festival while munching on scrumptious macaroon’s from Argo Tea.

We ended the night at Rosebud Prime, where we enjoyed a yummy non-steak dinner, and called it a night!

Wear it Wednesday | Graphic Tee & Maxi Skirt

Hello everyone!

superman tee
Today I have a quick post showing off my new favorite graphic tee featuring the Superman logo. I was never a big fan of Superman until I watched Man of Steel (you can read our movie review here) this year. I loved how the story was explained so well in the movie that I finally understood why so many people are obsessed with Superman (I know I’m a little late), including the husband.

superman tee and maxi skirt

I’ve worn this maxi skirt several times this Summer, but mostly paired it with a more dressier tops (as seen here). I’m definitely enjoying this juxtaposition of the edgy/rugged graphic tee paired with something more feminine like a maxi skirt. I plan to incorporate this look more into my outfits, as it’s a great casual everyday look.

Wear it Wednesday | Maxi Scarf as a Cardigan

Hello everyone!!

madonna and me.jpg

“Who’s That Girl”?! Of course I had to take some silly snaps once I spotted these awesome records on sale this past weekend

Hope you all are having a wonderful week thus far. I’m excited to run a few errands today, but believe it or not the temperature is already dropping to 60’s! I feel like Summer just started and now we are fast approaching Fall. The season’s in Chicago have been quite strange this year since Spring almost skipped over and now Summer was hardly 3 months!

Back of scarf cardigan.jpg

Back view of the heart & leopard print maxi scarf I DIY’d to a cardigan

Today I’m featuring a maxi scarf that I have been in love with even before I bought it (mainly because of the print). How is that possible? Well the print of the scarf is quite popular since it was part of Louis Vuitton’s collection several seasons ago and I was in love then but not so much with the price tag. But with all pretty high end designer items they eventually trickle down to high street shops, and voila I found mine at A’gaci several months back (but can still be found on ebay).

side angle of DIY scarf.jpg

Side view to determine the coverage you get with this DIY cardigan

For this look you can take any maxi scarf you own and tie two knots, one from right side and one left side, to the middle of the longest side of the scarf. The scarf then will then look like it has arm holes and you can simply wear it as a cardigan. Quite easy! If you want to learn more ways to wrap your scarf in creative ways there are several YouTube videos showing the process.

Fresh henna and cardigan.jpg

Do you spot the fresh henna? This was taken before the other pics

My Wear it Wednesday look features basics with straight leg denim, a stripped top, and black scarf for hijab. This is as basic as it gets, but by using a printed scarf you can spruce up the look without it being complicated.
