March on Women | Divergent Movie Review

You’re different. You don’t fit into a category. They can’t control you. They call it Divergent. -Tori

Hi all!

This past weekend I finally checked out a new movie with the husband, Divergent, which was completely filmed in Chicago.

Our main reasoning for watching it was to support it since it’s filmed in our city. There were no expectations nor did we bother watching trailers or read reviews- but boy were we surprised!

Divergent was fantastic, and not just because it was filmed in Chicago. The main actors are fairly new but they do an amazing job. The leading roles of protagonist and antagonist characters are all played by female actresses, the movie in our opinion was better than Hunger Games and definitely better than Twilight, ladies you will swoon over Theo James, the story is not as gruesome as other young adult films, the entire soundtrack is amazing and it is worth watching in theaters.

We were so happy to find out Divergent topped box office this past weekend and made $56 million- that’s insane but it deserves it in our opinion.

Here are our ratings for the movie.

AnU Overall Rating: 8.5/10
Action Scenes: 8/10
Direction: 7/10
Story: 8.5/10

Memorable Quotes | Best of Oscars 2014

Happy Monday everyone!

Yesterday the husband and I watched the 86th annual Academy Awards. I for one love watching the red carpet live to see the dresses and all, then might watch the Oscars–this year was no different. Ellen Degeneres hosted keeping it funny like her usual self, and then we’d switch back and forth to watch the premier of The Voice.

In my opinion, all the “trending” actors & actress’ were spot on with their choice for outfits and accessories, no major blunders–accept for Jennifer Lawrence falling–once again. And a list of best dressed can be found on a million places online along with a list of winners for the night–I won’t be critiquing that.

The acceptance speeches were what blew me away. They were inspirational, genuine, and perfectly delivered. While I don’t look up to celebrities as heroes or role models, I will say they might have done a thing or two right in order to be successful and be where they are today. Here are my top favorite acceptance speech quotes from Oscar 2014 winners. Moral of the post–Believe in yourself!

When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from your dreams are valid.”

Perhaps those of us in the industry clinging to the idea that female films with women at the center are niche — they are not. Audiences want to see them, and they make money. The world is round, people!”

Top 10 Summer 2013 Movies & Updates

Happy Sunday everyone!

Bye, bye Summer and welcome Fall! Well, technically Fall started on September 22 but I was pretending it was still Summer, and also around that time I officially became uber busy with grad school. I’m loving being back in school and therefore apologize in advance for the lack of posts. I haven’t been able to even hang out with the husband (*tear tear*) because while it’s only been a few weeks of school it definitely feels like a lot more. I’ve already taken several quizzes and even my first exam this past week and two more are coming up. This is my first time in a quarter system and boy, does it go fast!

Enough about me and lets discuss all the amazing movies that came out this Summer! The husband and I were discussing which ones were our favorite and we were both quite surprised that we watched so many great movies. Our list of “watched” movies was longer but we narrowed it down to our 10 favorite.

These movies are in no particular order because the husband and I do have slightly different opinions on movies and which ones would rank top on our individual lists.

Thank you for visiting & hope you have a very warm & cozy Fall!

Movie Review | The Muslims Are Coming

Happy Sunday!

Laughter is always the best medicine, but does it help the Islamaphobia cause? The husband and I watched the new slight documentary The Muslims are Coming, and we were confused at first, at times annoyed, laughed out loud, had aha moments and even cried a little (or only just me not the husband). The movie has limited release and is currently running in Chicago for a few more days at the Gene Siskel Film Center.

The film documents a tour Muslim comedians organize for free to reach out to non-Muslims in major and rural cities to address Islamaphobia. Some of our favorite parts of the movie were when the comedians set up booth in different cities to play “Ask a Muslim,” “What Religious Scripture is it” and “Hug a Muslim.” Some jokes and clips from their tour are also documented, however don’t expect to see the entire comedy tour in this movie. If you consider yourself to be a prude just be cautioned of sexual related jokes in the movie. Other than that, we recommend seeing The Muslims are Coming and give it an overall rating of 8.5/10 (because it was actually funny, and we love supporting positive Muslim causes/business’).

Get more information about the movie on their website.

Have a great Sunday!

Movie Review | Man of Steel 3D

Hi everyone!

20130615-155952.jpg

Hope everyone is having a great weekend! Yesterday we checked out Man of Steel which we had been looking forward to for many months, well actually the husband had been looking forward for many months. Yet, to my surprise I loved it more than I ever expected and became smitten with Henry Cavill, the actor playing superman.

What I loved about the movie was how well the story was told and how those who are not aware of the story can catch up without feeling lost throughout the movie.

AnU Overall Rating: 8.5/10
3D Experience: 8/10

If you haven’t already I would highly recommend checking it out.
FYI- there is no after credits scene so don’t bother staying an extra five minutes after the movie.

Have a great Saturday!

Movie Review | Fast and the Furious 6

Happy Friday!

I’m gonna keep this post short since I updated about our Ohio road trip in yesterday’s blog, and since I didn’t want to over do it yesterday I’m posting the movie review today.

K.I.S.S (keep it simple stupid) Movie Review: Fast and the Furious 6

AnU Overall Rating: 7/10
(Normal) Action Scenes: 4/10
(Impossible) Action Scenes: 9/10
(Racing/Cars) Action: 4/10
Direction: 7/10
Story: 7/10

The husband found it necessary to address the different types of action scenes in the movie thus rating them differently. Part 6 of F&F was more about regular action scenes. The actual cars racing scenes seemed a bit lackluster as true racing cars weren’t used, instead BMW 5 series were used- which doesn’t make sense to car enthusiasts.

Do let us know what you thought of the movie or what plans you have for the weekend.

Thank you for visiting and have a great weekend!!

Road Trip & Spring Deity HOOTD

Happy Thursday everyone!

I hope you all are having a wonderful week. I feel like the week flew by and now I’m looking forward to the weekend.

As I mentioned for Memorial Day weekend we headed out to Cleveland, Ohio. We decided to take a road trip and enjoy the scenery from a car since we hardly get to drive. We arrived in Cleveland late on Friday night and went straight to bed. Saturday morning we hangout in downtown Cleveland, went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (pictures below) as we were entering one of the employees commented on my look and called me “the Spring deity” it made me laugh and I told them I was there to represent Spring. The Hall of Fame was good but not as great as I expected. I think I enjoyed the architecture more than the actual displays inside. In the afternoon we met with friends to have dinner at Stir Crazy Fresh Asian Cuisine. The restaurant has a unique concept of custom creating your stir fry, basically you get to pick which ingredients you would like in your dish and the chef cooks it up while you watch- similar in concept to a hibachi restaurant but quicker! I guess you can kind of screw up your dish if you over do it with the ingredients but mine turned out pretty good. The husband ordered a stir fry from the menu and he also enjoyed his dish.
After dinner we caught a viewing of Fast and the Furious 6 (I can’t believe this was the sixth and seventh is in the works!) You can check out our KISS movie review to see how we rate it tomorrow on the blog.

The next day we headed to Cedar Point with our friends. The husband and I hadn’t heard of Cedar Point until recently- I guess being from Florida the land of Disney World, Universal Studios and Bush Gardens we forgot other theme parks actually exist. Cedar Point was great- it was nice to enjoy some extreme roller coasters but the two hour lines were not fun. The newest roller coaster was Gate Keeper which we rated as second best to Millenium Force- we completely recommend that if you love roller coasters and visit Cedar Point. We left the park pretty late and were drained by the time we got to our hotel. Monday we headed back to Illinois and relaxed rest of the day by watching our newest Netflix tv binge, Alias.

Blues, Whites & Star Trek Movie Review

Happy Thursday everyone!

This will be a quick hijabi outfit of the day. I wore this outfit a few day’s ago when we went to see the new Star Trek movie, Into the Darkness, which I will KISS review in this post (I know it’s a little late but those of you waiting for the long weekend to see it then this might help.) We liked the movie, but I was confused just a tad since I’m not an avid Star Trek fan.

Iron Man 3 review & HOOTD deets

Hello everyone! Our usual Friday consists of going out for our date night however this week we decided to order in and catch a late showing of Iron Man 3 in 3D.  We both loved the movie (myself especially since I can’t resist Robert Downey Jr. in the Iron Man).  Following in our K.I.S.S review which we will do for movies we watch which mostly include action thrillers since Umair is a self-proclaimed geeky movie buff.
