Ramadan | AnU Host an Iftar Party

Happy Tuesday everyone!

20130730-125402.jpg
This past weekend the husband and I hosted our first iftar (breaking the fast) party at our house. We cooked traditional Pakistani iftari food and the quintessential Pakistani dinner.

I even got festive and found this free printable DIY banner online from an website called Sakina Design, they feature other cute printable for stars and beautiful Islamic art frames that I’m dying to get. The banner was a hit and gave me ideas to get more creative with the decor for future iftaries/parties.

20130730-125452.jpg
The menu for iftari consisted of fruit chaat, cholay, spinach pakoray, aloo pakoray, and per my husbands request finger pepper pakoray which weren’t spicy to our surprise.

20130730-130028.jpg
We also had dahi baray, chicken samosas (bought frozen from Tahoora), ordered some pizza for the kids, coriander chutney and homemade tamarind chutney.

20130730-130043.jpg
Of course we had some fresh watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, apple juice, and rooh afza, the summer drink of the east which every iftari has to have otherwise your thirst doesn’t feel quenched.

20130730-131054.jpg
Everyone was stuffed from the iftari but we still had dinner, spicy biryani made by the husband (the man can cook some yummy food Alhmd), and chicken tikka made by me. The main dinner was accompanied by salad and yogurt raita.

20130730-131459.jpg
And last but not least, the iftari party had a sweet ending with some light summer mango & pineapple dessert.

20130730-131648.jpg

We enjoyed hosting our 1st ever iftari party. While it was a lot of work, insha’Allah (God willing) we will host future parties with more family and friends. Until then I hope all my Muslim family and friends are having a blessed Ramadan and insha’Allah we can all make the most of the last ten days, and may our fasts & ibadah (supplications) be accepted ameen.

Have you hosted any parties? What are some traditional items you cook?

Thank you for visiting!

July Favorites

Hello everyone!

I can’t believe the month of July is almost coming to an end. Where has half the year gone?
With that said, I’ve decided to feature my favorites for the month. This list is in no specific order I have added favorites of things that mattered most to the husband and I this month. Enjoy!

Favorite Hijab/Scarf– Light weight maxi hijab from Kapray Shapray on Facebook.
Not sure if she will sell these individually as I received them to match some outfits I ordered from her.

20130729-165530.jpg

These scarfs are very lightweight making them great for Summer, they give great coverage and drape beautifully without much fuss.  The picture below was taken on my recent trip to Florida.  You can check out more pictures here.

20130729-165140.jpg

Favorite Beauty Product– Loreal True Match crayon concealer in light/medium & Milani liquid eyes in 01 black.

20130729-165749.jpg

Both of these products are so creamy and easy to apply. I’ve been obsessed with both of these products ever since I bought them beginning of July.

20130729-165757.jpg

20130729-165802.jpg

Favorite Food Dish– Mediterranean Mahi Mahi at Grand Lux
The husband recommended I try this dish and we were so surprised at the flavor of the sauce and how well all the flavors mixed. We will definitely be ordering this Mahi Mahi dish again.

Favorite RestaurantRed Fish Grill in Miami
I’ve lived in Miami for over 21 years and I’ve never heard of this hidden gem of a restaurant. It feels completely secluded and almost a romantic getaway in Miami. And to top it off the food was scrumptious as well. Unfortunately, we didn’t take any blog worthy pics of the restaurant since it was date night, and we visited the restaurant with three other couples to celebrate our Anniversaries which fall within a few weeks of each other. It was a beautiful and romantic evening which was planned completely by our husbands. The husbands swept us ladies off our feet. Alhamdulillah (all thanks to God).

Favorite Dessert– From Margie’s Candies.
We’ve passed by this ice cream shop a few times and always saw so many people standing outside. It caught our curiosity and we finally tried two sundaes, a brownie a la mode and a caramel one. They were both delicious except we had to get them in to-go boxes because we didn’t want to wait to be seated inside.

Favorite Hijabi Outfit of the Day– I loved wearing my wedding outfits this month. So they definitely are my favorites for the month. My wedding outfits were ordered from Kapray Shapray and my hijab/scarf is from Pearl Daisy.

Favorite Couple Shot– Has to be from my brothers wedding this month. More pictures from the wedding can be seen here.

Favorite Couple Moment of the Month– Our 1st Anniversary.
We had a small celebration in Florida with family. We kept it simple since Ramadan had started therefore we went out to a Middle Eastern restaurant to break fast and catch up with family and friends.

Here are a few snaps from the day.

Wear it Wednesday | High-Low Top

Hello everyone!

20130724-111246.jpg
Today I’m featuring a very hijabi friendly top. High-low tops, skirts and dresses are still all over the place and I think they will be for a while. What I love about high-low tops is the extra coverage you get for the back.

20130724-111253.jpg

20130724-111300.jpg

Here is a picture you’ve seen if you follow me on Instagram. The husband and I went out for iftari at Reza’s, which is one of the few halal restaurants in the city that actually has yummy food. We were surprised to find a buffet set up for iftari that basically had everything from their regular menu and more. We, of course, opted for the buffet and indulged in everything from fresh fruits, lentil soup, chicken/lamb/beef kebabs, and dill/white/biryani rice.

Miami Panorama | South Point Park & Memories

Happy Tuesday everyone!

20130723-114627.jpg
Today I’m skipping the usual Tempting Tuesday post and featuring a panorama I took in Miami at one of my favorite parks. South Point park holds a special place in my heart because it was the place the husband and I had our engagement photo session. I have lived in Miami for a long time and it was only when our photographers suggested the spot did I come to know of this somewhat hidden gem. It’s definitely a sophisticated area compared to rest of South Beach, and to me a romantic spot.

While on my vacation this year I highly suggested South Point park to my family and friends visiting from out of town. While visiting the park with my family and friends this time around I missed my husband (since he flew into Miami closer towards the wedding festivities), because I couldn’t help but think back to the wonderful pictures taken around the park and the beautiful memories we had created.

I did hesitate approaching the park with my family and friends thinking to myself that perhaps I’m the only one who finds the park beautiful because of my connection to it, however to my relief everyone was mesmerized by the beauty of the park. And to top it off everyone enjoyed gelato at the delish and chic 4D, which was also featured in our engagement photo session.

Is there a place that you visit that always brings beautiful memories to mind? Please comment and share.

Thank you for reading & visit again tomorrow!

Faithful Friday | Quranic Gems – Ramadan

Happy Friday/Jummah everyone!

It is the second Friday of Ramadan and I still feel like Ramadan just began. This month seriously needs to slow down so we can all gain more blessings!

I recently came across these beautiful short videos that teach a quick lesson. I might be late on watching these and if you are like me then you can still catch up and benefit from them inshahAllah.

In addition, while on Facebook I came across this wonderful summary of the first six video- a good refresher & reminder of the lessons taught.

Thank you/JazakAllah for visiting and please remember my family and I in your prayers.

Wear it Wednesday | Summer Wedding Pakistani Edition

Hello everyone & happy hump day!

20130717-154614.jpg

While it’s the middle of the week we are still unpacking from our Florida vacation. Apparently, we had more luggage flying back then we did going and that was mainly due to the heavy wedding outfits, shoes, gifts received, and of course all my personal stuff I decided to finally bring back with me to Chicago that I left at my Dad’s house. I originally thought it was a few miscellaneous items and maybe a week’s worth of clothes but I was completely wrong as I still had several weeks worth of outfits, shoes, accessories, books, new Pakistani outfits and gifts still waiting for me. I told the husband I had to take all of it back with me so somehow we managed to bring it back but now I just have to magically create more closet and storage space- simple!

As promised, today I will share snaps from my brother’s wedding. Perhaps some of you have already seen these pics if you follow me on other social media sites, but I will share some that were taken from my iPhone and reserved for the blog.

Most of the outfits worn at my brother’s wedding were my own bridal outfits. Pakistani bridal outfits are quite heavily styled with stones, and are not always suitable to wear again as you don’t want to commit the cardinal sin of trying to outdo the bride. I do follow the American rule “don’t wear white to someone else’s wedding” or in Pakistani/Indian tradition “red/maroon” as I consider it taboo (others may disagree). However, lucky for me my brother’s wife wore a beautiful hot pink & deep purple bridal on the wedding reception/shaadi day therefore I committed no such cardinal sin.

I encourage wearing your bridal outfits to close family or friends wedding, because after all you spent tons of money on them, but just make sure with the bride that she is ok with you wearing your heavy outfit.

Wearing my bridal wedding outfits this summer and my husband wearing his outfits from our wedding gave flashbacks of the wonderful time and memories that were created during our own wedding. Additionally, we were able to take some cute couple snaps without the craziness and stress from our own wedding. The only outfit that isn’t from my wedding is the navy blue sari worn at my brother’s Valimah. All the ladies decided to wear sari’s in all shades of blue to match the color theme of the Valimah. Enjoy!

Ramadan Kareem & Updates

Happy Monday everyone!

20130715-174351.jpg

I apologize for the lack of posts. I’ve been on a hiatus from blogging since I was visiting family in Florida for over a month. It was my brother’s wedding and many guests flew in few weeks prior to the wedding to spend time together before all the wedding craziness. Alhamdulillah (Thanks to God) it was a wonderful trip, a great wedding, and amazing time spent with family and friends with beautiful memories to cherish forever. In a future post I will share some pictures from the wedding.

20130715-175620.jpg

Right after all the wedding events the blessed month of Ramadan began. To all my fellow Muslim family, friends and blog readers I pray you have a very blessed Ramadan, may all your fasts, and worship/prayer be excepted. Ameen. Please do remember me and my family in your duas. JazakAllah

HOOTD | Red, White & Blue

Happy Monday everyone!

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend and now I’m sure everyone is looking forward to 4th of July to spend time with family and friends.

Today’s outfit of the day post is my version of a casual 4th of July look that will be great for parties, picnics or just going out to see fireworks.

I wore this outfit last week when we went on a glass bottom boat in Key Largo. It was a very hot and sunny day and because of the blazing sun we were all drained quickly. We mostly stayed inside the boat where there was air conditioning but went outside when we all started to get nauseous once the boat was closer to the coral reefs, due to feeling nauseous most of us didn’t even get to experience seeing the fish and coral reef- what a bummer! The outside open area on the boat was quite refreshing and windy which helped to get over the nausea. Nonetheless, it was a great outing with the family.

The cutie in one of the pics is my niece who was also the flower girl at my wedding.
